There is this one thing that happens when you are casually enjoying life.
Almost every woman can relate to this happenstance.
Lets take a journey for a second.
As you are getting into bed, you do the usual routine and set your alarm to wake up at 7:30 AM.
The night passes quickly as you visit many worlds within a dream.
Sunlight creeps through your window in the early morning hours.
You peak one eye open wondering how much longer you have before your alarm goes off.
7:30 AM , your alarm buzzes and you realize you feel more tired than usual.
You get up and it dawns on you that today is day one of your menstrual cycle.
You get ready for work, half moody, half calm, knowing the gates of cramp hell are about to be unleashed.
You look to your medicine cabinet, pop three pain killers, and proceed to brew up some coffee for that extra energy boost.
Here is to another period week of cramps, cravings, and random bouts of exhaustion.
I have been haunted for what seems like my entire adult and pubescent life by period cramps.
I can remember myself in my high school years literally writhing on the floor in pain on some nights, as I mercifully clung to a heat pack.
I have gone through my share of teas, homeopathic medicine, and many other “fixes” to say the least.
As I was nearing my cycle for this go-around of the month, something astounding changed for me.
You see, I use to be a daily coffee drinker.
I found it to be a source of comfort in the mornings and motivating enough to stay focused on my job.
However due to the small bouts of anxiety I would get from drinking too much, I was in the market for a replacement.
I came across this one sacred substance that is used in ceremonies in many ancient indigenous traditions.
I began drinking it daily while doing my morning journal-ing practices.
As my cycle crept up that week I noticed something out of the ordinary.
I would usually have to pop at least 3-5 pain killers a day to manage my period pain, but this time my cramps were remarkably nonexistent.
I thought carefully back to what had changed in my routine.
It was the coffee replacement, and from then on everything connected.
The Thing that Replaced My Coffee Crushed My Period Cramps
The substance known as Cacao is what created a magical pain-free period for me.
Cacao: What is it and why is it magic?
Cacao is the dark raw form of chocolate that tastes bitter on its own.
While some of us already naturally crave chocolate during our periods, Cacao fits in perfectly.
People often confuse cocoa and cacao as they sound very similar and are both a form of chocolate. The biggest difference however lies in the way each is processed.
Cacao is the raw form of chocolate made from the un-roasted cacao beans. Extracting the cacao from un-roasted cacao beans allows for the preservation of living enzymes and nutrient-dense contents.
Cacao contains a natural pain killer known as Magnesium. Magnesium is a natural pain reliever that soothes any tension created by aching muscles.
Taking a Magnesium salt bath filled with high-grade magnesium salt crystals can also help to reduce pain.
This includes your woman parts!
Ill take that for a win!
Cacao is also rich with phenylethylamine. Phenylethylamine is the same chemical released in the body that leads to those feelings of deep love and openheartedness.
Lets be real.
No one needs more feelings of deep love and openheartedness than a woman on her moon cycle.
So you mean to tell me Cacoa not only crushes period pain but makes me feel a sense of groundedness and radiance while doing so?
Yea, Ill take 18 bags, and another two as backup.
You can buy Cacao from most healthy chain grocery stores. Some Cacao mixes include adaptogen mushrooms which packs it even more with nutrients and anti-stress medicines.
I drink a Cacao mix with adaptogens for added concentration. More on adaptogens in another post.
I drink it hot and naturally sweeten mine with honey or a low sugar creamer to make it more “hot chocolate” like.
Drinking Cacao has become a salacious daily morning ritual that I look forward too, menstrual or not.
Other Uses of Cacao
When I drink my cacao, I like to do what I call a mini “cacao ceremony”.
A cacao ceremony is a shamanic practice used by indigenous traditions to honor the cacao and elevate your state of mind.
While Cacao does not have any psychedelic or hallucinogenic effects, it can be used as a way to balance your internal energy and start your day off with an empowered state of mind.
In short adding Cacao to your daily routine will check off the following boxes
- Reduce or ease period cramps
- Add more nutrients to your daily intake
- Give you more heavenly feel-good vibes
- Honor your self and your womanhood
Ill take all four of those wins sis.
